Boma Lathu

Your trusted source for clear, credible, and inclusive civic information.

Boma Lathu is Malawi’s national civic education platform, created to help every citizen understand their rights, responsibilities, and role in shaping governance and community development. The platform provides verified civic information, simple learning tools, and community engagement structures that ensure no Malawian is left behind in accessing reliable civic knowledge.

We make civic education accessible, engaging, and practical by combining digital innovation with community-level outreach. This enables citizens—regardless of age, background, or location—to learn, ask questions, participate, and take informed action.

Boma Lathu is implemented in close collaboration with the Directorate of Civic Education (DoCE), the Government of Malawi’s mandated institution responsible for regulating, coordinating, and supplying civic education nationwide.

Why Boma Lathu Exists

Across Malawi, many citizens want to participate in governance but lack trusted guidance to navigate public processes and institutions. Boma Lathu exists to close this civic information gap. We provide verified and simplified civic messages, neutral information aligned with DoCE standards, practical explanations of public services, and platforms where citizens can ask questions and receive credible support. Our work ensures every Malawian has the knowledge to make informed decisions as voters, parents, entrepreneurs, and contributors to national development.

What We Do

We focus on making civic learning accessible, practical, and trusted across Malawi.

We simplify laws, policies, reforms, and public announcements so people can clearly understand:

  • their rights
  • their responsibilities
  • how government systems work
  • where and how to access services

Through WhatsApp, SMS, and the Ask Boma Lathu helpdesk, we create safe spaces for civic inquiry, dialogue, and clarity on issues that matter to everyday life.

We work with Civic Education Hubs (CEHs), NICE, Traditional Authorities, youth groups, radio partners, and CSOs to bring civic learning directly to communities—ensuring local relevance and inclusivity.

We strengthen two-way communication that rebuilds trust, encourages accountability, and supports practical problem-solving at local and national levels.

How We Work

Boma Lathu uses a hybrid civic education model that blends digital access with local presence to reach citizens wherever they are.

Digital platforms accessible nationwide

We share civic information through our website, mobile-friendly resources, WhatsApp and SMS tips, podcasts, radio, and social media. This makes reliable information easy to access, even in low-bandwidth areas.

Community hubs and partner networks

Civic Education Hubs work with Traditional Authorities, DICET Officers, youth creators, local media, community radios, and civil society to turn national civic messages into practical action at community lev

Verified information from authoritative sources

All Boma Lathu content is verified by the Directorate of Civic Education, aligned with national standards, non-partisan, and culturally appropriate, helping counter misinformation and build trust.

Two-way engagement between citizens and duty bearers

We create space for citizens to ask questions, share concerns, and engage through hub-led dialogues and structured reporting channels. This strengthens accountability and supports Malawi’s democratic culture.
